Dordt College Baseball vs. Midland (NE)

(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Dordt College Defenders came up with eight runs in their final two at-bats to take a 10-4 win over the Midland Warriors in Great Plains Athletic Conference play on Saturday, April 9 at Open Space Park in Sioux Center. The win made it a split of play on Saturday and gave Dordt its first win of conference play.
As they did in game one, the Defenders took a lead after one inning with Phillip Sears walking; Morgan Halpert bunted him over to second and Travis Dekkers doubled to score Sears from second. Zach Staudt followed with a run scoring single for a 2-0 lead. Dordt missed out on an even bigger inning by stranding two runners.
Midland got one run back in the second and then took a 4-2 lead when they scored three runs on four hits in the third inning. A scoreless fourth followed before Dordt mounted a threat in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Phillip Sears singled and Morgan Halpert followed with a bunt where the throw was misplayed, allowing both runner to advance to second and third with no outs. Travis Dekkers and Zach Staudt were unable to come up with base hits and with two outs Eric Torgerson pulled a ball over the fence in left-centerfield to give the Defenders a 5-4 lead.
While Dordt was coming back, freshman pitcher Brad Vande Griend was in the midst of retiring ten straight batters to close the game. Dordt got five runs for insurance in the sixth on five hits. Travis Dekkes produced a run with a single and Eric Torgerson got two more across with a single. Brandon Van Engen had a triple to score the final run of the inning and Vande Griend pitched a 1-2-3 top of the seventh for a complete game win.
Vande Griend walked one and struck out four while scattering four runs on nine hits.
Eric Torgerson was 2-5 with five runs batted in. Phillip Sears scored three runs and had a pair of singles and Travis Dekkers knocked in two. Zach Staudt and Brandon Van Engen each had two hits as well for the Defenders who are now 1-9 in the league and 2-19 overall. Midland entered the weekend 5-0 in the league but lost three of four and are now 6-3 in the conference and 14-15 overall. Dordt will travel to Nebraska Wesleyan in Lincoln for a doubleheader on Tuesday, April 12.
