Dordt College Baseball vs. Mount Marty

(Yankton, South Dakota) The Dordt College Defender baseball team lost a 4-3 decision in a come from behind attempt on Friday night at Yankton, South Dakota against the Mount Marty Lancers. Dordt fought back from a 2-0 deficit and a 4-2 hole before losing 4-3 despite outhitting the hosts 8-7.
Mount Marty scored two runs in the third inning for the 2-0 lead. Dordt got the game back to even with two in the top of the sixth on an error by the leftfielder and a double by Taylor Wyatt that got Dekkers in to tie it 2-2. A double play by the Lancers ended the Defender threat and stranded two runners.
Mount Marty bounced back with two runs in the bottom of the sixth. Eric Torgerson, appearing in relief, ended the inning with the bases loaded to keep the Defenders within striking distance.
Dordt mounted a threat in the top of the seventh with Eric Torgerson doubling and his courtesy runner Josh Mouw advanced to third on a ground out by Brandon Van Engen to the right side of the infield. Phillip Sears and Morgan Halpert were hit by a pitch and walked respectively, loading the bases with one out. After a Mount Marty pitching change Travis Dekkers lifted a fly ball to left field that scored a run but the rally ended when the next batter struck out.
Zach Staudt and Taylor Wyatt both had two hits for the Defenders and Morgan Halpert walked twice.
Lucas Carls started the game and gave up two runs on six hits with five walks and three strikeouts. Ryan Baas took the loss in relief and was charged with two runs. Eric Torgerson worked the final two-thirds of an inning and walked three and struck out one. Dominic Wieselaar was the winning pitcher with three walks and six strikeouts and eight hits allowed. Adam McVay recorded the final two outs and got the save.
