Dordt College Baseball vs. Hastings

(Sioux Center, Iowa) Thhe Dordt College Defenders couldn't get the timely hit in their 5-3 loss to the Hastings College Broncos in game two of their doubleheader on Friday night in Sioux Center. The Defenders had an early lead but couldn't make that stand up as they were out hit 8-6.
Dordt got on the board with a run in the second when Morgan Halpert reached on an error and advanced to second. After a sacrifice bunt by Jon Holwerda, the Defenders scored on a single by Eric Torgerson.
The lead was short lived as Hastings scored in the top of the third and then took the lead with three runs in the fourth inning. The two teams each scored runs in the fifth. Hastings took a 5-1 lead but Dordt struck back with two in the home half of the inning. The Defenders chased starter Adam Poulsen with three straight singles after a lead off walk produced one run with no outs. The Defenders got one more run after Addison Ives was able to coax Sears into a doubleplay grounder and the inning ended with no more fireworks as Ives recorded a strikeout. The Defenders put together one more threat in the sixth but stranded two runners without getting the timely hit to tie the game.
Brad VandeGriend was the losing pitcher after working four innings and allowing four runs on three hits. Mark Nyhoff came on in relief and allowed one run on three hits with two walks and three strikeouts. Adam Poulsen got the win and Addison Ives preserved the win by working the final four innings and allowing no runs.
Lucas Carls and Eric Torgerson each had two hits for the Defenders while Travis Dekkers recorded his 99th career hit for the Defenders and currently ranks 14th all-time in career hits. Geoff Hobbs, John Lamaster and Daniel Nealon all had two hits for Hastings with Nealon scoring two and knocking two in.
Hastings is 14-13 overall and 5-1 in the league while Dordt is 1-13 and 0-4. Dordt will host Doane on Saturday at 1:00 while Hastings faces Northwestern.
