Dordt College Baseball vs. Hastings

(Sioux Center, Iowa) Dordt College came back from a 3-0 deficit in game one of its doubleheader with Hastings on Friday night in Great Plains Athletic Conference action in Sioux Center, Iowa.
The Defenders fell behind 3-0 when Hastings scored three runs in the fifth inning off of Dordt starter Lucas Carls. The Defenders had been sidestepping trouble most of the game up to that point with Hastings stranding runners in each of the first four innings.
Dordt got on the board with a run in the sixth when Tyler Comella singled and Phillip Sears followed with a single after an out to put runners at first and second. Morgan Halpert loaded the bases with a single and the Defenders broke through for a run when Travis Dekkers grounder to the middle infield was misplayed on the exchange from shortstop to second. Comella scored on the play.
Jeremy Engbers was able to work a scoreless seventh inning to keep the score at 3-1 and the Defenders tied the game on a Phillip Sears triple with runners on second and third with two outs. The runners were pushed into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by Brandon Van Engen, getting Alex Frankl and Jon Holwerda to second and third. Sears was stranded at third to end the inning.
Hastings got one run across in the extra frame with two hits and Dordt stranded the tying run at second in the home half of the eighth for the final of 4-3.
Dordt was outhit 7-4 but took advantage of four Hastings errors. Sears had two of Dordt's four hits and knocked in two runs. Halpert and Comella each had a single for Dordt.
Engbers took the loss while working three innings on the mound and gave up one run and struck out two. Lucas Carls started the game and went five innings and allowed three runs on five hits with four strikeouts and four walks. Kirby Wells got credit for the win, pitching seven innings and allowing three runs on four hits with nine strikeouts and one walk. Addison Ives got the save in working a scoreless eighth. The win was Hastings' third extra inning win in a row and improved the Broncos to 13-13 overall and 4-1 in the league. Dordt slips to 1-12 and 0-3.
