Dordt College Baseball vs. Manhattan Christian

(Manhattan, Kansas) The Dordt baseball team fought from behind in game two of their doubleheader with Manhattan Christian College on Wednesday afternoon and came up short 6-4 despite outhitting the hosts 6-4.

The Crusaders scored two runs in the first inning off two hits. Dordt bounced back with a run in the third inning when Morgan Halpert singled down the line with two outs. Travis Dekkers followed with a double that scored Halpert.

Down 2-1 the Defenders scored another run in the fourth to tie it. Zach Staudt and Jon Holwerda each singled and were on second and third after Holwerda’s hit was misplayed. Eric Torgerson was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Tyler Comella delivered a single to center field for one run with one out but a double play by the Crusaders got them out of the inning with no further damage done.

One hit and two errors opened the door for three runs by Manhattan Christian in the bottom of the fourth. Dordt answered with two runs in the fifth with Morgan Halpert reaching on a walk and Dekkers knocked him in with a double. Dekkers eventually scored on a failed pick off attempt at third base and the Defenders were within 5-4.

The hosts got a run for insurance in the sixth while the Defenders were retired in order in the sixth and stranded a runner at second in the seventh inning.

Dekkers was 2-4 with a run scored and run batted in. Staudt, Holwerda, Sam De Nooy, Halpert and Comella all had one hit with Halpert scoring two runs and walking twice. Lucas Carls took the loss as he worked four innings and allowed five runs on three hits with five walks and two strikeouts. Jeremy Engebers worked a scoreless fifth, getting out of a two-walk jam with two strikeouts. Jake Slings pitched the sixth, giving up one run on one hit and a walk. Michael Foster was the winning pitcher with eight hits allowed in five innings of work for Manhattan Christian.

Dordt is 0-2 and is scheduled to play two doubleheaders with Peru State on Friday and Saturday.
