Dordt College Baseball vs. Midland Lutheran
April 24, 2010
(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Dordt College Defender baseball team overcame an early 2-0 deficit to win a 4-2 decision over Midland Lutheran to secure a sweep of the visitors and thrust themselves back in the hunt for a spot in the GPAC post-season with six games to go.
Dordt's Bryan Diemer got touched for two runs in the first when DJ Johnson clubbed a homerun to right-centerfield with a man on base. The Defenders scored a run in the first when Josh Bowers doubled down the leftfield line and Travis Dekkers knocked him in with a two-out single.
The hosts got two more runs in the third inning on a pair of Midland Lutheran miscues on the same play. Josh Bowers walked with one out and advanced to second on a Travis Dekkers single. Kyle Davis then hit a grounder to the left side that the Midland Lutheran shortstop tried to flip to third base for the out. Instead the throw got away and ended up near the Dordt dugout. Bowers scored on the play. Midland Lutheran's third baseman then tried to get Davis at second as the Dordt centerfielder raced to advance. The throw was errant and ended up in the outfield, allowing Dekkers to score on the play. Dordt got a run for insurance in the fourth on an Eric Torgerson towering blast to lead the inning off. Dordt threatened to blow the game open but left the bases loaded after getting them full with one out.
Bryan Diemer retired nine of the last ten batters he faced and he earned Dordt's second complete game win of the day. He allowed five hits and struck out seven with one walk issued. Dordt and Midland Lutheran both had five hits with Dekkers going 2-3 with a run scored and knocked in while Josh Bowers scored two runs and was 1-3 at the plate. Eric Torgerson was 1-3 with his homerun and Trey Schneider was 1-2.
