Dordt College Baseball vs. Mount Marty
April 20, 2010
(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Defender baseball team could not dig themselves out of an early 6-0 hole and fell 11-7 to the visiting Mount Marty Lancers in a single 9 inning non-conference game this evening. The Lancers improve to 28-11 on the season with the win while Dordt College moves to 9-22 on the year.
The Lancers took an early 1-0 advantage when Krier, the second batter to the plate for Mount Marty, hit a home run that triggered a four run opening inning. The four runs came on 5 hits and an error and the Lancers also left 2 runners on base in the frame.
Back to back homers by Schmidt and Lambrechts in the top half of the second inning extended the Lancer margin to 6-0 after two innings and neither team was able to do any damage in the third.
A lead-off triple by the Lancer's Josh Wenande ignited another big inning as Mount Marty added 4 more runs on 4 hits in the top half of the fourth inning to take a 10-0 lead. Dordt was able to score their first run of the contest in the bottom half of the 4th inning. Dordt lead off the inning with a single by Asta but the Defenders then hit into a double play. With two outs, Zach Staudt hit an in the park home run for Dordt to make it a 10-1 deficit after 4 innings.
Mount Marty added their final run of the contest in the top of the 5th inning with Kemp drawing a walk with two outs and advancing to second on a Dordt wild pitch before being driven in by a Lambrecht single. Trailing 11-1 the Defenders got the bats going in the bottom of the 5th scoring 3 runs on 4 hits and leaving the bases loaded. Brown, Halpert and Torgerson all had singles in the inning while Bowers had a ground rule RBI double to cut the Lancer lead to 11-4
Neither team was able to score in the 6th and Dordt also held off the Lancers in the top of the seventh before bringing three more across the plate to make it 11-7. Kyle Davis sparked a two out rally with a single to center field, followed by a Zach Staudt single, this one to left field. Eric Torgerson drove in Davis and Staudt with a two RBI double to left center. Bridgewater then singled to left field driving in Fraley, who was pinch running for Torgerson.
The last two innings saw little offensive action as Mount Marty only mustered one additional hit over the final two frames while Dordt was unable to pick up a hit or put a runner on base with their final six at bats.
Since the game was a non-conference affair, Dordt went deep into their line-up, sending 16 different players to the plate and using 6 different pitchers. Bradd Trimm, Jacob Slings and Mark Nyhoff each pitched 2 innings while Eric Walter, Ryan Baas and Ryan De Wit spent one inning apiece on the mound for the Defenders.
Eric Torgerson went 2 for 2 in the contest with a double and 2 RBI, Josh Bowers went 2 for 3 on the night with one RBI and one run scored while Zach Staudt was 2 for 5 with one RBI and two runs scored. Dordt College will host a double-header with Concordia on Friday, April 23 with the first game scheduled to begin at 4:00 pm in Open Space Park in Sioux Center, Iowa.
