Dordt College Baseball vs. Doane

(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Dordt College Defender comeback came up short in game one of their doubleheader with the Doane Tigers in GPAC baseball Friday afternoon in Sioux Center, Iowa. The Defenders allowed four runs in the fifth inning to trail 5-1 before scratching out a run each in the sixth and seventh innings before losing with the tying run at the plate.
Doane scored in the first inning but left the bases loaded with Bryan Diemer pitching out of trouble. Dordt eventually tied the game with a run in the bottom of the fourth when Kyle Davis walked and Morgan Halpert was hit by a pitch. A ground ball by Phillip Sears through the left side of the infield scored Davis to tie the game.
Doane came back with four runs in the top of the fifth when the strung together five straight singles with two outs to knock Dordt starter Bryan Diemer out of the game.
Down 5-1 the Defenders got a run in the sixth when Tony Asta doubled to lead the inning off and scored on back to back ground outs by Kyle Davis and Morgan Halpert. After a scoreless top of the seventh the Defenders got one when Ben Fife doubled and moved up on a grounder. Fife then scored when Travis Feekes reached on an error. Feekes eventually got to second after a grounder by Josh Bowers but was stranded there when Travis Dekkers struck out to close the game.
Dordt had three runs on six hits with Tony Asta getting a double. Travis Feekes and Travis Dekkers both had first inning singles. Halpert and Sears got credit for singles and Fife had his double. Dordt stranded six while Doane had nine left on base.
Bryan Diemer takes the loss after working four and two-third innings with five runs allowed on nine hits while striking out three. Eric Torgerson pitched the final two and two-third innings and allowed one hit. Dexter Spitsnogle got the win while giving up four hits and one run while Chance Brull got credit for the save by working the seventh and allowed one run on one hit. Matt Komenda pitched the sixth for the Tigers.
