Dordt College Baseball vs. Hastings

(Sioux Center, Iowa) Dordt scored their first doubleheader sweep of the season with a 4-3 win over the Hastings College Broncos in game two of their doubleheader on Saturday in Sioux Center. The Defenders were down 3-0 at one point but got a walk off homerun from Morgan Halpert to win the game with two outs in the bottom of the seventh.
Hastings sent nine batters to the plate in the first inning with with the first three batters coming around to score. Hastings missed out on a huge inning after leaving the bases loaded.
Dordt was getting close but coming away empty in the first four frames, stranding seven runners while getting shut out. The Defneders finally broke through with a run in the fifth when Kyle Davis singled ans stole second. A wild pitch got Davis to third and a Josh Bowers grounder got him in.
Dordt tied the game in the sixth, getting the rally going with two outs. Robbi Garcia walked with two down and Feekes worked for a walk to get the tying run on. With the runners moving on contact, Kyle Davis smashed a double to centerfield to tie the game.
Hastings threatened in the top of the seventh when they got their lead off batter on. Trying to bunt him over, the Hastings batter pushed the ball back to the pitcher. Asta got the runner at second for the out and then struck the next batter out. The runner tried to advance on a dropped third strike and was thrown out on the play to end the inning.
Two Defenders were retired to start the inning but Morgan Halpert ended the game with a smash down the left field line that hooked inside the foul pole. It was Halpert's third homerun of the season.
Asta, after a rocky start, pitched six shutout innings for the win while scattering eight hits and struck out five with four walks. Paul Larkin took the loss in one inning of relief while giving up two runs on two hits with one walk and one strikeout. Michael Crain started the game for Hastings and struck out nine while allowing three hits.
Kyle Davis was 3-4 at the plate with two runs batted in and one run scored. Halpert and Garcia each had a hit a piece for Dordt's total of five.
Dordt is 8-18 overall and 4-8 in the league at the midpoint of the GPAC season. Hastings if now 11-18 overall and 4-6 in the league. Dordt will face Mount Marty in Yankton, South Dakota on Friday, April 16 in their next outing.
