Dordt College Baseball vs. Morningside
March 30, 2009
(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Dordt College Defender baseball team came within inches of bouncing back from a 17-0 loss in game one of their doubleheader for a win but lost an 8-7 decision at the hands of the Morningside Mustangs in Sioux Center, Iowa on Monday afternoon. The games were originally scheduled for Friday, March 27 but were moved back to Monday because of poor field conditions.
Dordt took a 5-1 lead after one inning when Travis Dekkers doubled with two outs and Ben Fife and Evan Pheneger walked to load the bases. Eric Torgerson reached when his ground ball was misplayed by Morningside and a run scored. Morgan Halpert then delivered a bases clearing double to make it 4-1 and Eric Anderson's double made it 5-1 before the inning came to an end.
Three runs in the second by Morningside made it 5-4 but the Defenders plated a run in the bottom of the inning when Travis Dekkers smoked a line drive homerun to right field for a 6-4 advantage. After a scoreless third Jared Noteboom smacked a three-run homerun that gave the Mustangs a 7-6 lead. That score stood until the bottom of the sixth when Phillip Sears walked and Travis Feekes walked. Dillon Peters was hit by a pitch to load the bases and a ground out by Travis Dekkers tied the score.
The two teams were scoreless in the seventh and Dordt's Cameron Gagnon retired the first two batters he faced in the eighth before Noteboom drilled his second homerun of the game for the 8-7 lead. Dordt very nearly pulled the game out when Anderson walked to lead off the home half of the eighth. Sears sacrificed him to second and Anderson advanced to third on a wild pitch with one out. A walk to Dillon Peters with two outs put runners at the corners and Travis Dekkers was issued a free pass to load the bases. With the bases loaded and two outs Ben Fife hit a line drive to right field that looked destined to win the game but a lunging catch by DeAndre Foster saved the game for Morningside.
Dordt's Gagnon went the distance with five earned runs allowed with seven walks and six strikeouts. Gagnon also had to work around eight Dordt errors in helping to keep the Defenders close. Gabe Shockman got the win in three innings of relief with one run allowed, five walks and four strikeouts.
Dekkers was 2-4 with two runs scored, two runs batted in and a homerun and a double. Halpert was 2-4 with a pair of doubles adn three runs batted in. Peters and Torgerson each had base hits and Fife reached with a pair of walks.
Noteboom had three of Morningside's seven hits and had four runs batted in--all on homeruns.
Dordt slips to 1-7 in the league and 6-18 overall while Morningside is 5-3 in the GPAC and 20-13 overall. The two teams play in a non-conference, single nine inning game on Wednesday night in Sioux Center at 5:00.
