Dordt College Baseball vs. Tabor

(Hillsboro, Kansas) The Dordt College Defender baseball team lost an improbable decision to the Tabor Blue Jays on Tuesday afternoon, March 17 in Hillsboro, Kansas. The Defenders held a 5-1 lead with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning but surrendered eight unearned runs, the last four on a walkoff grand slam, for the 9-5 win.
Tabor got a run off of starter Nate De Wit in the first inning and the Defenders answered back with a pair in the second, one on a Ben Fife single and another on a Morgan Halpert fielder's choice. The Defenders left three on base in the inning.
Dordt got another run in the third when Travis Dekkers crossed the plate on a double play. Zach Staudt figured into the runs in the fourth with a two run single to make it 5-1.
The Defenders had two more chances to stretch the lead but left two runners on in the sixth and eighth innings.
Disaster struck in the ninth inning when the Defenders recorded two outs, but committed two early errors to open the door for the hosts. A third error didn't extend the inning but it gave Tabor an extra base. The Blue Jays ended the game with a grand slam for the 9-5 difference.
De Wit pitched 8 and 2/3 innings and takes the loss while allowing eight hits, one earned run. He walked five and struck out 12.
Travis Feekes was 3-5 with a double and one run scored. Zach Staudt was 3-5 with two runs batted in and two doubles and Morgan Halpert knocked in a run and was 1-4 at the plate and Ben Fife also plated a run.
Dordt will face Doane and Hastings this weekend in their GPAC openers.
