Dordt College Baseball vs. Northwestern
April 26, 2008
(Orange City, Iowa) The Dordt College Defender baseball team took advantage of six Northwestern Red Raider errors and a six-hit pitching performance by Bryan Diemer to register an 11-1 win in Orange City, Iowa on Saturday, April 26 in game one of their doubleheader.
The Defenders scored twice in the first inning when Bobby Lutke hit a ground ball behind second base that was fielded an thrown over the first baseman's head, allowing Dillon Peters and Travis Feekes to score the first runs of the game. Northwestern threatened in the home half of the first inning, only to leave the bases loaded after jamming them full with one out.
Dordt got another four unearned runs in the third inning when, after two strikeouts, Dillon Peters reached with a single, Travis De Jong followed with a single and the two runners were balked over to second and third. It was Lutke again who knocked the two runners in with a ball that was misplayed by the Northwestern shortstop. A hit batsman later, Chris Liebhart delivered a base hit to score Lutke. Evan Pheneger then scored the final run of the inning on a Jed Bennett infield single and Liebhart was thrown out on the play at home.
Leading 6-0, the Defenders had to sidestep trouble again when Diemers loaded the bases with one out in the fourth. This time the righthander would strike out the final two batters of the inning to escape unscathed. After a scoreless fifth inning the Defenders scored one in the sixth when Josh Bowers doubled to left-center and eventually scored when an Austin Turner drive was misplayed in leftfield in the win, allowing Bowers to score. Four more runs came in the seventh when Dordt banged out five hits against Northwestern reliever Drew Nonnemacher. De Jong, Lutke, Liebhart, Bennett and Feekes all had basehits in the inning.
Northwestern averted the shutout when they scored one in the seventh on a pair of hits.
Diemer improved to 4-1 this season, scattering six hits, walking three and striking out four while Mihai Burlea dropped the decision, getting tagged for seven runs on eight hits with four strikeouts and two hit batsmen. Burlea didn't allow an earned run.
