Dordt College Baseball vs. Morningside

(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Dordt College Defenders lost a 10-9 decision to the Morningside Mustangs in non-conference baseball action on Wednesday night at Open Space Park in Sioux Center.

The Mustangs scored four in the first inning to take a lead they never gave up. Travis De Jong got two runs back with a homerun in the bottom of the first inning to make it 4-2. Morningside got one more in the third and scored three unearned runs in the fourth to get in front 8-2.

The Defenders got one run back in the fourth and then scored five in the fifth with Dillon Peters knocking in a run with a single and Travis De Jong plated two more with a double. With the score tied at 8-8, Morningside retook the lead in the top of the eighth with a pair of runs only to have Dordt load the bases in the bottom of the ninth inning when Jed Bennett singled, Travis Feekes singled and Travis De Jong was hit by a pitch to load the bases with nobody out. An infield fly took some of the pressure off the Mustangs and Evan Pheneger got one run in with a sacrifice fly but the Defenders got no more with the third out recorded with the tying and winning runs on base.

Travis De Jong was 3-4 with two runs and runs batted in. Bennett was 3-4 with three runs scored. Ben Fife was 3-4 at the plate with a pair of doubles and two rbi and Bobby Lutke scored twice and had two walks.

Craig Horstman started the game for the Defenders and went four innings and allowing five hits with eight runs--three of them earned and five walks with one strikeout. Leland Kootstra took the loss, allowing two runs in the eighth inning. James Brouillette started for Morningside and had four and two-thirds innings of work with seven hits allowed and eight runs given up--five of them earned.

Dordt is now 8-15 overall and stand 5-7 in the league while Morningside is 6-6 and 16-11. Dordt is scheduled to go to Mount Marty and Nebraska Wesleyan in GPAC play this weekend on Friday and Saturday respectively.
