Dordt College Baseball vs. Briar Cliff
April 5, 2008
(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Dordt College Defender baseball team rallied from a first game loss to split their doubleheader with the Briar Cliff Chargers in Sioux Center on a windswept Open Space Park Field. The Defenders never trailed in taking a 14-3 five inning win over their GPAC rival.
Dordt started the scoring with one run in the first when Travis Feekes doubled and was pushed in with a Travis De Jong single. The Defenders then got seven in the second, speared by a Chris Liebhart homerun down the rightfield line and two errors and a wild pitch opened the door for six more runs with Feekes and Austin Turner both singling and Bobby Lutke delivered a three-run double and Liebart knocked in another run with a double. In all, Dordt scored seven runs on six hits in the inning.
Briar Cliff was unable to put together much of a charge with Bryan Diemer staying out of trouble with one run allowed in each of the second, third and fourth innings. Dordt got one in the fourth and then tacked on five more in the fourth with Dillon Peters delivering a two run single and De Jong a two run double. Diemer than got a pair of Briar Cliff groundouts to close the top of the fifth inning and the Defenders had the shortened win.
Diemer went the distance allowing six hits, three runs—two of them earned and walked three with three strikeouts. Garrett Linhardt took the loss for the Chargers with eight hits, eight runs and one strikeout—just two of his charged runs were earned in an inning and two-thirds.
Dordt banged out 12 hits and took advantage of four Briar Cliff errors in the win and got a 3-4 day from Travis Feekes with three runs, one run batted in and a double. Turner and Dillon Peters both had two hits and two runs scored while Travis De Jong had two hits with three runs batted in as did Turner. Liebhart was 2-3 with both of his hits coming in the second inning-a homerun and a double and Lutke had three runs batted in on one hit.
Dordt is now 5-7 in the GPAC and 8-13 overall while Briar Cliff is 7-3 in the GPAC and 8-16 overall. Dordt is scheduled to host Buena Vista in a non-conference nine-inning contest on Monday.
