Dordt College Baseball vs. Doane

(Crete, Nebraska) The Dordt Defender baseball team lost a lead in the seventh inning of their Great Plains Athletic Conference opener against Doane on Friday in Crete, Nebraska and lost in extra innings 4-2 in the first of two games at Doane today.
The Defenders scored two in the first inning when Jed Bennett walked and advanced on a passed ball. Travis De Jong slugged a double for a run batted in and Bobby Lutke singled Eric Van Maanen, a courtesy runner, over to third. Dillon Peters then pushed Van Maanen in with a sacrifice fly.
From their both pitchers settled in with Chris Liebhart taking a shutout into the seventh inning when Doane came to life with two runs to force extra innings. After a scoreless top of the eighth, the Tigers got a runner on and Mitch Vernon belted a one out homerun for the 4-2 win off of reliever Scott Van Zanten.
Dordt had six hits with Bennett, Lutke and Nate Daane all singling. Daryl Visser had two hits--one a single and one a double while De Jong had a double and was 1-3 at the plate.
Chris Liebhart went seven innings and allowed six hits, two runs--one of which was earned, walked one and struck out four. Van Zanten takes the loss, allowing two runs on two hits while recording one out in the eight. Bryan Dutcher gets the win, working all eight innings for the Tigers.
