Student Activities Committee (SAC) is a group of 12-15 students who work on initiating, planning, organizing, facilitating, and implementing campus-wide activities. Two members of the committee hold coordinator positions, and are compensated through the Work Study Program for the time that their committee membership requires.
The coordinators meet weekly with the volunteer members and discuss future events and current activities. They also assess recent programs and the concerns of the students on campus.
In addition to the weekly meetings, the coordinators meet weekly with the Director of Student Activities (currently the Director of Resident Life). These meetings link SAC to Student Services, and provide feedback, assessment, and accountability.
SAC exists to work within the Dordt College community. SAC does not seek to be an extension of the college that simply provides entertainment for the students. They desire to use their positions as members of this community to guide in the making of wise decisions. This means that SAC welcomes suggestions from other members in the Dordt community.
SAC, exists additionally, to develop exciting and fun opportunities. Fun is the key word. Learning is important, but learning is not always "fun." Education at Dordt involves the development of the whole person, not just academic skills. SAC wants to make life at Dordt a fun experience. Exciting is a word with deeper meaning. SAC would like to see students passionate, stirred up, and motivated by their experiences. This may involve challenges to paradigms, but it also means the opportunity to grow and express one's faith in a positive way for the benefit of others.
SAC also exists to unite the campus and glorify God. The Dordt campus is already united in many ways, but SAC believes that unity can be strengthened, and that we can experience further growth as one of a body of believers. God is glorified in many ways: when we sing to Him, earnestly pray to Him, live as He commanded us to in thought, word, and deed, and as we exercise our bodies, abilities and minds. A major goal for SAC is to provide opportunities where such exercise is available.
All students who attend Dordt College are eligible to join SAC. They must go through a selection process, however. The process begins with an informational meeting in February. Those interested then complete applications and are personally interviewed by the SAC coordinators. Appointments to the committee are made in March. The committee is chosen considering gender balance, equal class representation, previous experience, and potential leadership.
