Meet The Team
Vanessa Bruinsma

Vanessa Bruinsma--served as the captain on her high school volleyball and basketball teams at Unity Christian (British Columbia). Played a year of club volleyball and was a Fraser Valley first-team all-star.

Coach VB says: Vanessa has the size needed to play the front row at the college level. She has a lot of experience playing on good teams in an area where volleyball is played at a high level. Vanessa will get better with experience.

Jenna Buyert

Jenna Buyert--Was a member of three state title teams at Western Christian. She averaged 1.5 kills per game in 2003 and hit for a .318 kill efficiency as a senior. Was named Class 2A All-State honorable mention last season along with All-Lakes Conference second team and All Northwest Iowa Review.

Coach VB says: Jenna has progressed through one of the best high school programs in the country. Jenna has a wealth of experience playing both left and right side. Jenna's a player who doesn't make a lot of mistakes. She will adjust to college ball very quickly.

Tara De Boer

Tara De Boer--had a banner year as a sophomore in leading the Lady Defenders in kills with four per game and kill efficiency at .282. She led the team in blocks with 1.1 per game. Was named first team All-GPAC and All-Region IV. Was an honorable mention All-American selection. Was picked for the All-Conference team second team honors in NAIA Region IV as a freshman when she averaged 3.3 kills per game and 1.1 blocks per game. Was a starting middle hitter as a sophomore at Western Christian High School when they were the Class 2A state runner up. Helped Western to a State Title in her senior year and was a first team Class 2A performer in 2000 and 2001 while earning Elite All State honors as a Senior.

Coach VB says: Tara has developed into one of the dominating middles in the NAIA. Because of her quickness she can slow down opponents' spikes. Her explosiveness also makes her attacks hard to stop.

Amanda Eekhoff

Amanda Eekhoff--Amanda averaged 3.5 kills per game for back-to-back Western Christian state championship teams. Eekhoff's kill efficiency was .450 as a senior. She also averaged 1.2 ace serves per game and 1.3 blocks per contest. Amanda was the co-player of the year in Iowa as a senior. She also earned Elite All-State honors last year and was a two-time Class 2A all-state first team pick. Amanda was an all-state tournament team selection as both a junior and senior.

Coach VB says: Amanda is a very gifted athlete who can combine power and agility normally associated with players who are not as tall. She will quickly become someone who will force other teams to devise defenses to control her attack.

Chelsea Gerdes

Chelsea Gerdes--Played JV volleyball at Dordt as a freshman. Averaged 3.6 digs and had 20 ace serves in 54 games played. Was a mainstay at Sioux Falls Christian. Earned All-Tournament honors her senior year for the Chargers and was a Second Team All- State Class A selection as a senior. Had 75 kills and 184 digs last year while taking First Team All Conference honors. Boasted 97 percent serve accuracy. Also plays basketball for the Lady Defenders.

Coach VB says: Chelsea brings one of the most positive personalities we have had in the program for a long time. She has learned to read the defense and continues to become an excellent defensive player. Chelsea is a very solid player who continues to become better because she works hard every day.

Megan Groeneweg

Megan Groeneweg--Was a back row specialist for the varsity and set for the JV team . Groeneweg averaged 1.8 digs per game and led the team in ace serves with 73 last year. She also set for the Lady Defenders when Alisa Den Hartog was injured in early October--proving her value as a versatile performer. Prepped at Western Christian and was a standout defensive specialist. Plays outfield for the Lady Defender softball team.

Coach VB says: Megan has been asked to do many different things the last two years. She has set for the JV team and playing as serving and defensive specialist for the varsity team. Megan is valuable because of her skills and attitude.

Lisa Groen

Lisa Groen--Lisa registered 299 kills as a senior and helped the Sioux Falls Christian Lady Chargers to a 33-7 record last year and a runner-up finish in the 2003 South Dakota State Tournament. Groen was the team leader in ace serves and digs with 76 and 273 respectively. Lisa earned the Big Sioux Conference most valuable player award along with All-Sioux Falls, All-State and All-State tournament honors last year.

Coach VB says: Lisa comes from a strong program that is used to winning. She can jump and move quickly. Her defensive skills will help her adjust to college ball quickly and her offensive abilities will grow with her strength.

Jill Haan

Jill Haan--is recovering from a knee injury that occurred during basketball and required surgery in April. As a sophomore she averaged 5.5 digs per game along with .6 blocks and 1.9 kills per contest. She battled back from an early season ankle injury to post impressive numbers as a freshman in 2002. Steady all around player with numbers to back that up. Averaged 2.0 kills and 3.2 digs per game while hitting for a .264 kill efficiency in her first year. Earned honorable mention All-GPAC honors as a freshman. Much decorated high school career included All-State honors all four years at Unity Christian High School. Elite All-State pick as a senior along with 2A first team honors as a junior and senior. Earned fourth team honors as a sophomore and sixth team honors as a freshman.

Coach VB says: Jill is a player who has solidified the team. Her complete array of skills have allowed her to contribute in a variety of ways. Her serve receive and defensive abilities ranked toward the top in the country last season.

Jennifer Kempers

Jennifer Kempers--Was first team All War Eagle Conference selection as a senior while also garnering all-state honorable mention honors at Unity Christian High School. Was the starting setter on Unity's team that advanced to the regional final this past fall.

Coach VB says: Jennifer is a special athlete who has a combination of quickness and desire to compete. She has played as a hitter, setter and defensive specialist at the high school level. Adjusting to the power and quickness of college volleyball will not be an issue for Jennifer--she will push for playing time somewhere.

Traci Kooima

Traci Kooima--became a very reliable passer and digger on last year's team. Averaged 2.2 digs and had 48 ace serves during the season. Was a back row specialist on back-to-back State Championship Teams at Western in 2001 and 2002. Averaged 2.7 digs per game as a high school senior and led her team with 60 ace serves.

Coach VB says: Traci's specialty is serve receive and playing defense. She was very solid in the back row and played at the same level no matter what the score or situation was. Traci is very tough mentally and enjoys being on the floor when the game is on the line.

Rachel Pontier

Rachel Pontier--Was a steady performer for the Lady Defenders in the middle last year. Is the only senior on the roster. Averaged 3.8 kills with a .281 kill efficiency last year and was named an NAIA scholar-athlete and was a first team All-GPAC pick and second team all-NAIA region IV selection last year. Made an immediate impact as a freshman in 2001 when she averaged 3.6 kills per game and had a .318 kill efficiency. Was named a second team All-GPAC performer after her freshman year. A key recruit for Dordt after completing her high school career at Unity Christian High School in Orange City where she was the Class 2A Player of the Year while being named to the Elite All State Team and Class 2A First Team as a senior. Was a second team Class 2A pick in 1999.

Coach VB says: Rachel will be asked to provide leadership on and off the court. She is an excellent Christian role model for the younger players in the program. Rachel is a great player who has been through the college volleyball battles and has learned to use her many different skills for the good of the team.

Lisette Schon

Lisette Schon--was a second team all-provincial pick as a senior and helped her team to a second place finish in the provincial tournament. Led her team in serve efficiency at 92 percent.

Coach VB says: Will add depth to our front line. She has been dominant in her province with her hitting power and blocking. She's been working very hard in the offseason and has a lot of club experience.

Lindsey Shearer

Lindsey Shearer--Was a two-time letter winner while helping Lewis-Palmer High School to a Colorado state title in 2002 and the final four in 2003. Lindsey is a two-time academic all-state player and was given the coach's award at her high school in 2003.

Coach VB says: Lindsey has what coaches refer to as "hops" and knows how to anchor the right side of the front row with her blocking. Lindsey has a tremendous desire to succeed at the next level.

Kara Sinnema

Kara Sinnema--Earned all-conference, all-area and all-region honors as a senior at South Christian High School in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Also earned all-state honorable mention honors. Helped her team to conference and district crowns the last three years. Kara played for a team that qualified for the AAU national tournament in 2003.

Coach VB says: Kara is coming off an outstanding high school career. She is an aggressive player who can not only attack the ball but also play great defense. Kara will bring a lot of energy to the program and should only improve each and every practice.

Whitney Vander Plaats

Whitney Vander Plaats--Was a four-year varsity letter winner at Ogilvie High School and earned Great River All-Conference honors in 2001, 2002 and 2003. In 2003 she was named the conference setter of the year while garnering team mvp honors as well. Whitney totaled 396 assists with 84 kills and a 96 percent serve efficiency last season.

Coach VB says: Whitney comes with a wealth of setting experience. With very few setters presently in our program Whitney will be a welcome addition.

Jen Van Beek

Jen Van Beek--Spent time with both the Varsity and JV as a sophomore. She averaged 4.1 kills for the 15-9 JV team and averaged nearly a kill a game in 17 appearances for the varsity. Prepped at Western Christian where she was a member of the 2001 team that won the Class 2A State Title.

Coach VB says: Jennifer has dedicated herself to improve each year she is involved in volleyball at Dordt College. Her daily offseason workouts have proved her commitment and leadership to the entire team. Jen can play any position in the front row and can be a force at any time.

Kelly Van Beek

Kelly Van Beek--appeared in all 119 games for Western Christian last fall and averaged 2.0 digs per game. Kelly was also the team's leading server with a 94 percent efficiency and registered 36 ace serves. She was a second team All-Lakes Conference selection last year and earned All-Academic Lakes Conference honors as well.

Coach VB says: Kelly is agile and quick and thrives on digging balls. She was the player who expected to get all the balls not blocked by the front row the last two years while helping her team to another state championship. Kelly is a true scholar-athlete who will adjust quickly to college volleyball.

Rachel Van Beek

Rachel Van Beek--had a breakthrough season as a sophomore when she averaged 3.5 kills on the left side. She shared team honors in kill efficiency with a .282 "batting average". Earned second team all-GPAC postseason honors. Was a First Team All-State pick in Class 2A as a senior at Western Christian. Plays basketball for the Lady Defenders.

Coach VB says: Rachel has become one of the dominant outside hitters in the region. Her combination of power and deception make her difficult to defend. Rachel can terminate a long rally with her strong attack from the left side.

Halley Van Laningham

Halley Van Laningham--A graduate of Lincoln High School, Halley earned her team's most valuable player award last year while also taking all-conference first team honors and honorable mention all-state honors. She put up 645 assists last season with 168 digs and 41 ace serves. She also played extensively for the Nebraska Juniors 17 and 18 Club team.

Coach VB says: Halley will fill the vacuum left when our setter graduated last year. Halley has done everything she can to prepare herself to set at the college level. She has played with high level club teams plus put in the time during the off-season to keep improving her skills.

Emily Van Voorst

Emily Van Voorst--Was the setter on two straight Iowa state title winning teams in 2002 and 2003. Emily averaged 8.8 assists per game as a senior and was in on 69 blocks and served 72 aces while also knocking down 75 kills. She was an all-state tournament team pick in 2002 and 2003 and was named to the All-Class Elite team in Iowa both years. Was named the 2002 Class 2A player of the year.

Coach VB says: Emily has come through one of the most successful high school programs in the Midwest. Not only a great setter, she has a combination of height and quickness. Emily has the ability to block and play defense which will make her a valuable player at Dordt College.

Lindsey Van Wyk

Lindsey Van Wyk--Played in all 153 games for Dordt College last fall as a freshman. Played all the way around the rotation and has strong numbers. She averaged 2.6 kills, 4.3 digs, .6 blocks per game and was second on the team in ace serves with 59. Earned All-GPAC honorable mention as a freshman. Led her Pella Christian team to the 2002 Iowa State Class 1A State Semifinals. Averaged 4.6 kills per game and was named to the Class 1A All State First Team after earning Second Team honors as a junior. Plays basketball for coach Glenn Bouma's Lady Defenders.

Coach VB says: Lindsey had a tremendous freshman year as a varsity starter. She is a gifted athlete who will continue to improve her attack plus anchor the serve receive pattern. Coming in with experience will allow Lindsey to be relaxed and continue to play at the highest level needed at the college level.
