Season Preview
(Sioux Center, Iowa;1998) -- With the World Cup of Soccer this
past summer, the anticipation of a new soccer season always hits a higher
level. That's the case at Dordt College as the men and women prepare
to kick-off their 1998 season.
The Dordt women are coming off a 15-3-2 campaign in 1997, a season
that ended with a shoot-out loss in the Independent
Regional Final game versus the University of Mary.
Two seniors have graduated from last year's
team as Teresa Jansma (Chino, Calif.) and Krista Krikke (Denver, Colo.)
completed fine Lady Defender careers. Krikke scored 14 goals
in her senior season.
Leading the returning players is sophomore
Kalie Gaskill (Sioux City, Iowa) who as a freshman scored a school record
23
goals and was named an NAIA National Player-of-the-Week.
Fifteen letter-winners are back for the women
in 1998. The20-woman roster includes seven freshmen, six sophomores,
five juniors, and two seniors.
Jeanie Elgersma returns for her third year
as coach with a career record of 23-9-2.
The men's team also lost two seniors from
last year's 11-6-2 team that ended its season with a loss in a regional
play-
off game at National College in Rapid City, South Dakota.
Lost to graduation are Erek Van Riessen (Lee's
Summit, Mo.) and Amos Doornbos (Jordan Station, Ontario). Both Van
Riessen and Doornbos were four-year contributors to the program.
Leading the returning players in 1998 will be senior Jon Pelster
(Edmonton, Alberta), who as a junior led the team with 13
goals.
Head coach Bill Elgersma enters his sixth
year as the head coach with a career record of 63-25-8. Twelve letter-winners
are back in 1998, including seven freshmen, four sophomores, four juniors,
and five seniors on the 20-man roster.
