Meet The Team
Scott Boer Scott Boer
JR, Boyden, Iowa

Will play third base for the Defenders. Appeared in 28 games as a sophomore and batted .261 with 18 hits and 16 runs scored. Knocked in 16 runs as well. Played in 11 games as a freshman.

Coach Schouten says: Scott has made great strides defensively. We'll expect him to provide consistent offense this spring-he also has the capability of hitting for some power.
Nate Daane Nate Daane
SO, Waupun, Wisconsin

Had a 5.34 earned run average in seven appearances last season while going 0-4. Threw 30.3 innings as a freshman. Had a .209 batting average at the plate in 20 games played.

Coach Schouten says: Nate looks like he'll be our number two starting pitcher this spring. We'll also ask him to play some shortstop for us.

FR, Hull, Iowa

Freshman from Hull, Iowa. Will see time as a catcher this spring.

Coach Schouten says: Travis continues to improve his defense and he keeps getting stronger. He'll split time with Nate Van Wyk behind the plate this year.

Coach Schouten says: Dan will be a spot starter for us and he could fill the fourth spot in the rotation for us.

SO, Mount Vernon, Washington

Made 12 appearances on the mound for the Defenders while compiling a 1-4 record in 24 appearances as a freshman in 2004.

Coach Schouten says: Derek could fill a middle reliever role for us and he could see time in the starting rotation.
Brandon Haan Brandon Haan
JR, Sioux Center, Iowa

Earned All-GPAC honors as a sophomore. Has a 5-12 lifetime record while posting a 3.62 earned run average as a freshman and a 3.64 average as a sophomore. Has pitched 119 innings for the Defenders in two years. Posted a .367 batting average as a freshman with 36 hits. Followed that up with 27 hits last season with 17 runs batted in. Is a team captain for 2005.

Coach Schouten says: Brandon will be our number one pitcher this season. We'll look to him to give us offensive production in the middle of our lineup this spring.

Is a freshman out of Escondido, California. Will be a backup third baseman.

Coach Schouten says: Steve will probably be a backup third baseman for us-he's got a good arm and has some power at the plate.

Saw action in 18 games as a freshman in 2004. Batted .216 for the season while seeing most of his time at second base.

Coach Schouten says: Jeremy is a good defensive player and can provide us with a spark.

Freshman from Arlington Heights, Illinois-will be a pitcher for the Defenders.

Coach Schouten says: Craig will be used this spring as a spot starter and we'll also use him in some relief situations.

FR, Tucson, Arizona

Freshman from Tucson, Arizona. Can pitch and play shortstop.

Coach Schouten says: Alex has great potential as a pitcher and is a very solid defensive shortstop.

Coach Schouten says: Chris has a great command as a pitcher and shows good power at the plate. Chris will add depth to our pitching staff.

Freshman from Hudsonville, Michigan. Will see time at second base.

Coach Schouten says: Bobby continues to improve as a hitter. He is solid defensively and makes a good pivot at second base on double plays. He has a very good knowledge of situations.

FR, Centennial, Colorado

Freshman from Centennial, Colorado. Will pitch and play first base this year.

Coach Schouten says: Derek has great power as a hitter and is a very strong hitter. We expect him to pitch and have an impact playing first base for us as well.
Brent Van Maanen Brent Van Maanen
JR, Doon, Iowa

Has played in 60 games as a freshman and sophomore. Batted .286 last season while knocking in 18 runs and garnering 26 hits. Also scored 16 runs as a sophomore in 2004. Is a team captain for 2005.

Coach Schouten says: Brent will hit in the middle of the lineup. He's a good hitter and will play leftfield along with being a designated hitter in our order.

A freshman who prepped at Western Christian, Eric is pegged to play third base for the Defenders.

Coach Schouten says: Eric has great speed and will split time at third base this season. He'll be used in pinch running situations this year.
Nate Van Wyk Nate Van Wyk
SR, Grinnell, Iowa

Has caught in 54 games for the Defenders the last three years. Missed most of the 2003 season with an injured hand. Batted .203 last season in 28 games played. Will be a team captain this season.

Coach Schouten says: Nate does a great job of handling out pitchers. We expect him to bat in the middle of the lineup this season.

FR, Reasnor, Iowa

A freshman from Reasnor, Iowa-will give depth in the outfield.

Coach Schouten says: Landon will be a backup outfielder for us this season. He's got good speed and is a good defensive player.
Brad Vanden Bosch Brad Vanden Bosch
SR, Rock Valley, Iowa

Has started three years in center field for the Defenders while posting consistent numbers offensively. Earned All-GPAC honorable mention as a freshman when he batted .287 with 25 runs batted in and six doubles. Appeared in 36 games as a sophomore when he batted .289 with 35 hits and eight doubles. Last season batted .274 with 23 hits. Is a team captain for the 2005 season.

Coach Schouten says: Brad has had to overcome some injuries in preparation for this season. We expect him to be a leader for us both offensively and defensively.

Coach Schouten says: Daryl can play right field and he can pitch. He's trying to crack our rotation right now after spending most of his high school career as a reliever and closer.

Has played in 56 seasons the past two years as a middle infielder. Batted .271 as a freshman and .234 as a sophomore. Had five doubles last season and scored 12 runs as a freshman.

Coach Schouten says: Adam has great work ethic, he's a great defensive player and works hard every day. Adam leads by example.

JR, Inwood, Iowa

Played in 28 games in 2004 as a sophomore and had a .247 batting average with 21 hits. Also had a 1-1 record on the mound with 24 innings pitched.

Coach Schouten says: Jeff is a good defensive player and has great speed. We'll use him in right field along with doing some spot starting on the mound.
