Housed in the college’s Science and Technology Center, Dordt physics facilities include one large laboratory for introductory courses, a smaller laboratory for upper-level courses and student projects, and an optics room.
The astronomy facilities include an observatory with a roll-off roof located at the agricultural area on the south end of campus, and a new 12-foot dome observatory to be installed in the summer of 2007.
Specialized equipment includes computer workstations in the physics lab and several linux workstations in the engineering lab. Experimental equipment is available for students to use to study areas such as holography and laser optics, high-temperature superconductors, nuclear radiation, acoustics, electromagnetism, fluid mechanics, and astronomy.
Chemistry department equipment is also available to physics majors, including a brand new atomic absorption spectrophotometer, a nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer, a Fourier-transform infrared spectrophotometer, a fluorescence spectrometer, a gas chromatograph, an ultra-violet/visible spectrophotometer, a high-pressure liquid chromatograph, and a gas chromatograph. Students also have access to a wide-range of equipment in the mechanical and electrical engineering laboratories.
