American Studies Program
Like other programs Dordt offers in conjunction with the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities, the American Studies Program draws students from a number of Christian colleges. Students from a variety of majors spend a semester in the nation's capital attending classes, serving as interns in government and non-government agencies, and living in a Christian community. Spend a semester in the land down under with the famously laid- back Aussies at the Wesley Institute for Ministry and the Arts in Sydney. This urban campus allows you to explore a world-class city of contrasts and cultures while taking advantage of course offerings in drama, music, performing and visual arts. Students interested in China have the opportunity to engage this intriguing country from the inside. This semester includes study of standard Chinese language, geography, history, religion and culture, cross-cultural communication, and China’s modern development. Participants travel throughout China to such places as Beijing, Shanghai, Xian and the Guangzhou/Hong Kong region. They have ample opportunity to interact with Chinese faculty and students on the campus of the host university and with students of English whom they assist as conversation partners. The Contemporary Music Center is set up to prepare persons academically and creatively for potential careers in the mainstream music industry. The curriculum of this contemporary music program includes core seminars: Faith, Music and Culture, Introduction to the Music Industry and two elective tracks: the Artist track and the Executive track. Each student’s course work is supported with an individual and group practicum and an industry internship. Located in San Jose, Costa Rica, the program gives students the opportunity to study the language, culture, politics, history, economics, ecology, and religion of the region while living with a Costa Rican family. Students select one of four concentrations: Latin American Studies; International Business, Marketing and Management; Tropical Science and Sustainability; and Advanced Language & Literature. This program will allow you to gain exposure to the workings of the film industry, to the many academic disciplines that might be appropriate to it, and to critical thinking and reflection on what it means to be a Christian in this vocation. Along with other Christian students, you'll take three courses, plus you'll serve an internship, visit studios and production sites, and discuss issues with industry insiders. The MESP in Cairo, Egypt provides students with the opportunity to study Middle Eastern cultures, religions, and conflicts within this diverse and strategic region. Juniors and seniors from Christian colleges participate in interdisciplinary seminar classes, receive Arabic language instruction and serve as interns with organizations in Cairo. The MESP encourages and equips students to relate to the Muslim world in an informed and constructive manner. Click here for more information about this program. Russian Studies Program *
The RSP enables juniors and seniors from Christian colleges to spend a semester living and learning in Russia. Students study the Russian language and attend seminar courses on Russian culture, history, and current political and economic issues. Program participants experience a variety of Russian environments, living for twelve weeks in Nizhni Novgorod and visiting both Moscow and St. Petersburg. The Scholars’ Semester in Oxford, England is designed for high achieving students who wish to delve into the areas that interest them while living in this historical seat of learning. Academic tutors, lectures, and field trips comprise the program originally designed for students interested in Biblical Studies in Theology. The Washington Journalism Center is an advanced, experiential semester on Capitol Hill that will cultivate professional news skills and encourage students to think through the implications of being a Christian working in the news media in a city that is home to the powerful and the powerless.
