DC SIMS: Directors

The DCSIMS program is co-directed by Dr. Nathan Tintle and Val Zonnefeld, both full-time faculty in mathematics and statistics at Dordt College. Drs. Gary De Young and Calvin Jongsma, also full-time faculty in mathematics at Dordt, will be substantially involved in leading programs as part of the DCSIMS program.

Dr. Nathan Tintle, DCSIMS co-director

Since completing his Ph.D. in Statistics in 2005, Dr. Tintle has been the primary mentor for more than 30 undergraduate students in extended summer and/or academic year research projects in statistics, with the bulk of these students conducting research in statistical genetics and biostatistics. Dr. Tintle is also active in the development of novel curricular materials and pedagogical strategies in undergraduate statistics education. Dr. Tintle has received numerous federal and private grants to fund his research, awards for his research and mentoring of undergraduate students, published numerous peer-reviewed research articles and currently serves as a committee member for the Section for Statistics Education of the American Statistical Association.

Val Zonnefeld, DCSIMS co-director

Valorie Zonnefeld is an instructor of mathematics at Dordt. She has a Master of Education degree from Dordt and earned her B.A. in math education at Dordt in ’97, with an endorsement in K-12 athletic coaching. She also has a middle school endorsement from the University of Sioux Falls. Zonnefeld has most recently taught algebra and coached volleyball and soccer at Western Christian High School in Hull, and she has served as an adjunct instructor in mathematics and volleyball coach at Dordt. She’s also taught at Sanborn Christian and at Calvin Christian School in Escondido, CA.


Dr. Gary De Young, Program Leader for DCSIMS, Department Chair

Ph.D., University of Utah; teaches introductory and advanced courses in mathematics; special interests include mathematical modeling particularly within the biological sciences. For more information visit his homepage.


Dr. Calvin Jongsma, Program Leader for DCSIMS

Dr. Jongsma’s Ph.D. is from the University of Toronto, in mathematics and history of mathematics. He teaches a range of introductory and advanced courses in mathematics along with a logic course for the philosophy department. Dr. Jongsma’s special interests include the history of mathematics, foundations of mathematics, logic and proof, and reform in mathematics education on all levels. Currently he is writing a historically oriented book on topics typically taught by middle school mathematics teachers.
