ENGLISH
Program Options

The English program at Dordt allows students to choose from three different program emphases in the major in addition to minors in English, writing, and journalism.
- Literature — This option emphasizes the connection between reading and writing as well as how to value and understand fiction in all its forms through the eyes of faith. This richly diverse option offers courses in British and American literature, Shakespeare, film, short story, novel, and literary theory and criticism. This is a common option for students interested in pursuing graduate study in literature or even law.
- Writing — This option focuses on developing skills in the areas of creative, academic, and professional writing. With courses in journalism, expository writing, and business and technical writing, students learn a wide variety of writing styles and techniques that can serve them in a wide variety of fields.
- Secondary Education —For those interested in teaching English, language arts, or literature at the high school level, this emphasis combines those courses with courses in our secondary education program including student teaching opportunities. Students will learn the skills, get the experience, and gain the confidence needed to be an effective high school teacher.
