Some colleges fit students into their programs. At Dordt College, we don’t believe in the one-size-fits-all approach to education.
Here at Dordt, we’re flexible enough to custom design a program of study to your needs. If you find that none of the 40+ majors offered at Dordt are perfect for you, a tailor-made “individual studies major” will be exactly what you’re looking for in a college education.
Dordt’s individual studies major allows students to develop interdisciplinary programs of study. Along with general education requirements, you and your faculty advisor will select courses during your second year of study that will lead to a thorough understanding of your chosen area.
You and your advisor will collaborate to devise a 124-credit sequence that makes a unified program. This will include the 15 courses that make up Dordt’s general education program, a major consisting of at least 45 credits, and electives, all carefully selected to contribute to your selected area of study. Your proposal must be approved by the registrar, who will also periodically review your progress toward your goals.
You may find that a major in individual studies is more demanding than our traditional majors. You have to be self-reliant, self-motivated, have the ability to work independently, and carry a project to completion.
After graduation, however, you’ll feel confident knowing your major will help you meet your specific career goals.
