Modern computer technology offers a growing demand for people with the expertise to install, program, administer, and troubleshoot the wide variety of computer systems. Opportunities for computer technicians can be found in the fields of business, education, entertainment, and virtually everywhere.
Because computer technology plays such an important role in the shaping of our culture, there is a particular need for Christian leadership in this area. “The computer field provides tremendous opportunity to labor for the Kingdom of God in our society,” says computer science professor Nick Breems. “What’s missing are people committed to doing it.”
With rapid and on-going advances in technology, simply learning to use today’s hardware and software isn’t enough. Dordt College’s Computer Science program digs deeper, preparing students for tomorrow’s unknown advances by providing conceptual knowledge of why things work in a particular way. Combined with hands-on learning experiences, Dordt College’s two- and four-year degree programs provide graduates with the ability to change and grow along with technological advances.
“Our program is broadly based, emphasizing conceptual understanding and the application of those concepts,” says Dennis De Jong, professor. “This will prepare students for work in the area of computer information systems and enable them to adapt to the changes that will occur in computer technology.” Math training and other courses required for a Dordt College degree provide the foundation required in this dynamic and challenging field.
At Dordt you’ll receive personalized, quality instruction and advice from professors who are both dedicated teachers and committed Christians. They will provide you with excellent preparation in computer science, illumined by a Christian, biblically-based perspective, emphasizing the appropriate use of computing technology and service to others.
Dordt College’s computer science department is committed to maintaining state-of-the-art curriculum, materials, and methods of instruction. Over the past ten years the programming courses have used the most current programming languages, including C, C++, Visual Basic, Perl, and Java.
“We are also committed to providing hands-on learning experiences whenever possible,” says De Jong. Many Dordt students work for the college during the school year or over the summer, helping build and maintain the computer network and information systems used by the college. This practical experience serves as both a learning tool and a resumé builder to aid graduates in securing employment. In addition, a number of our students have worked with local businesses to help design, implement, enhance, and maintain computer information systems.
