CHEMISTRY
Program Options
The chemistry major includes courses in biochemistry, organic, analytical, inorganic, environmental, and physical chemistry, along with courses in mathematics and physics. You’ll also take courses that look at philosophical and historical perspectives on the physical sciences. Some students combine a chemistry major with a major in physics, math, biology, philosophy, or engineering. During the summer, you can earn credit toward your major by taking summer courses at the Au Sable Institute of Environmental Studies.
- Chemistry Major —If you are interested in a career in chemistry, such as research, chemical analysis, or further graduate work, this is a great option. This is also a good choice for students in pre-professional health programs such as pre-med, pre-dental, or pre-optometry.
- Chemistry Secondary Education — If your goal is to teach chemistry to high school students, this option combines the chemistry program with education courses to prepare you for a career in teaching. You choose a program that gives you a teaching endorsement in chemistry only or in combination with biology, physics, or earth science. - Chemistry Minor — This is a good option if you'd like to combine your interest in chemistry with another major. For example, if you're interested in working for a chemical company, you might combine a minor in chemistry with a business major.
