Program Options
As an agriculture major you'll take Core Program courses that give a foundation upon which to build your career. These courses in the natural sciences, humanities, and social sciences will help you develop a comprehensive view of agriculture, regardless of your program emphasis.
We offer bachelor of arts degrees in agriculture with seven different emphases. We also offer a two-year associate degree and support a pre-veterinary program.
- Agriculture — You'll choose a variety of classes that match your interests and meet your specific career goals.
- Agri-business — You'll take core courses in agriculture along with business courses, preparing you for a business career in the agriculture industry, in farm management, or in related business fields.
- Agriculture education — You can earn an accredited B.S. degree through a 3 + 1 cooperative program with the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Your first three years of classes are taken at Dordt, with the final year at UN-L.
- Animal Science — You'll take courses in animal nutrition, anatomy, production, physiology and breeding, and health. This is a common choice for students in the pre-veterinary program, those going to graduate school, and students planning careers in livestock production or related services.
- Ag Missions — You'll take both agriculture and theology classes to help you understand the cultural differences you may face on the mission field.
- Biotechnology — Taking agriculture and biology courses will prepare you for a variety of biotechnology-related areas, including research. A limited number of internships with local biotechnology industries are available.
- Plant Science — You'll take courses in soils, soil fertility, botany, forage crops, entomology, plant pathology, horticulture, weed science, and more, preparing you for graduate study or a career in agronomy, pest management, or horticulture.
Pre-Veterinary Medicine Program — Our agriculture program offers courses that support the professional programs of veterinary schools. Since different programs have different requirements, you'll plan your program to fit the school you'll attend.
Associate of Agriculture — For this two-year associate degree in agriculture, you'll take eight agriculture courses along with Core education requirements. Some A.A. graduates move directly into a job after graduation; others continue their education in a bachelor's degree program at Dordt or elsewhere.
You can also combine interests in agriculture and engineering.
