Program Overview
Program Description (top)
The Dordt College Master of Education degree is a 10 course, 30 semester-hour program with a concentration in Curriculum and Instruction. It provides practical, hands-on instruction for the elementary or secondary teacher who wants to learn more about what it means to teach in a distinctively Christian manner. Graduates of the Dordt M.Ed. program will be better able to articulate a Reformational Christian perspective on the learner and the teacher, on the nature of instruction, and on curriculum. They will also be prepared to translate that perspective within their classroom and school. Program Overview (top)

The program also meets the master's degree requirement for the Iowa Professional Teacher's License. Innovative Formats (top)
Summer Courses To serve practicing teachers who need to pursue their degree in the summer, Dordt College has adopted an innovative course format and sequence, allowing the student to complete the program in as few as three summers with minimal time spent on campus. Most courses consist of two phases: a pre-campus phase that involves preparation (e.g. reading and writing assignments) and an on-campus phase (one week per course) in July. Students are encouraged to begin the pre-campus work well in advance of the on-campus phase of each course. Students may register and begin pre-campus work as early as April 1. Dordt offers two online courses each year. In addition, Dordt encourages students to take online courses from other graduate education programs with similar perspectives, such as Calvin College or Geneva College. Online courses from other institutions may be taken as substitutes for courses in the Master of Education Academic Bulletin as part of the total transfer credits allowed. Transfer of Credit Students are permitted to transfer a total of nine semester hours of graduate work with a minimum of a B grade. All nine semester hours may come from any participating ARIHE* institution, while a maximum of six semester hours may come from non-ARIHE colleges, permitting an additional three hours to come from an ARIHE institution. For example, if a student enters the program with six semester hours in graduate education from a state university, an additional three hours may be taken through one of Calvin College's online courses. The following colleges are ARIHE institutions: Calvin College, Covenant College, Dordt College, Geneva College, Institute for Christian Studies, Redeemer University College, King's University College, and Trinity Christian College. *Association of Reformed Institutions in Higher Education Note: Courses taken more than ten years ago will not be considered for transfer credit.
