Library Services
Loan Period
A book may be checked out for a period of two weeks. Unless requested by another person, it may be renewed for another two weeks. DVDs and videotapes in the circulating collection check out for 2 days. DVDs/videos (feature length films) on permanent reserve check out for 1 day. Equipment (digital cameras, camcorders, webcams, GPS units, cassette tape players, portable DVD players, etc.) normally checks out for 2 days. Reference books may be checked out under certain circumstances. Contact a Reference Librarian. Journals and magazines do not check out except under certain circumstances. Contact a Reference Librarian. Items placed temporarily on RESERVE are checked out for shorter time periods with higher fines. The catalog lists items that are on reserve. Holds
If a book is already charged out, a "hold" may be placed on it at the Check Out Desk. You will be notified when the book has been returned. It will be held in your name for three days. Returning Books
Books charged out are to be returned to the book return deposit at the Check Out Desk. Books which have been used within the library should be placed on nearby tables. You should return reserve books directly to the Check Out Desk. When the library is closed, books may be returned in the book depository located at the northwest entrance to the Campus Center. Overdue Notices
The Library sends notices to borrowers who have books that are overdue. Students, faculty, and staff will receive their notices via email. Failure to receive or read notices does not excuse one from payment of overdue fines. Fines
If you fail to return a book on or before the date stamped on the date due slip, you will be charged a fine of $0.10 for each day the item is late. Fines for DVDs/videos are $0.50 per day. Overdue items on hourly reserve are charged a $0.10/hour late fee. Fines for digital cameras/camcorders are $5/day. If you have a question about these fees, or about a specific fine, please contact Darlene at the Check Out Desk (722-6047 or dreich@dordt.edu). Books and journal articles not available in the John and Louise Hulst Library or full-text online may be borrowed from other libraries (aka "Interlibrary Loan"). Usually there is no charge for this service. Charges may be assessed if a large number of requests are placed, if the library is charged a service fee, or if the research is part of a funded project (i.e. Studies Institute). A form must be filled out for each item being requested. Paper versions of the form may be picked up and filled out at the Check Out Desk. Online forms are available on the library's intranet site. Requests are processed as quickly as possible. Expect a turnaround time of at least a few days if the lending library is close to Dordt. However, on average, one to two weeks is a better estimate. A renewal of interlibrary loan items may be requested by contacting the Interlibrary Loan Department (722-6041 or ill@dordt.edu) before the item is due. There is a Xerox copy machine near the entrance of the library. The reference desk is staffed weekdays between 8am and 5pm. Information assistance is also provided in the evenings from 6:30-10:30pm. For reference assistance, call 722-6042, 722-6328, or send email to reference@dordt.edu. In the evenings, dial 722-6040. iLink (our web-based catalog) provides computerized access to the library's collections. In addition to listing the books, movies, and journals in the library's collections, iLink also provides information on reserve materials and user accounts. |
