Physics involves studying how the physical world works. Through experiment and theory, physicists develop ways to describe and predict physical behavior. Dordt physics students experience the beauty and elegance of how simple theories can be used to solve an infinite variety of problems. The overall goal of the physics department is to help students see God’s glory displayed in the physical world.
Learning physics can be challenging, but Dordt’s physics faculty uses a variety of innovative activities, experiments, demonstrations, and teaching techniques to aid student learning. They are readily available to help (even outside of class), resulting in students equipped to explore the God-created order of the physical world.
Dordt alumni who continue their education in advanced degree programs communicate that they feel as well-prepared as their peers from larger schools. Graduates entering the work force have also indicated a high degree of satisfaction in the training they have received.
In addition to course work, most physics majors serve the department as laboratory or course assistants, combining workstudy income with on-the-job training in research and teaching. Some majors have worked one-on-one with professors in research projects, resulting in papers published in scholarly journals.
