Music Program
Performance

Dordt’s music program offers the best of two worlds. The department is large enough to offer those with professional interests courses and lessons taught by specialists, yet small enough to accommodate non-majors who want to participate because they love music. Our faculty includes 21 full-time and adjunct professors, all of whom are excellent musicians.

Music Any student can find many opportunities to make music at Dordt. In fact, an average of 300 students annually choose to participate in musical groups. In addition to the large groups — Concert Band, Campus-Community Band, Chamber Orchestra, Concert Choir, Chorale and Women’s Chorus — individual and smallgroup opportunities abound. Students can take private lessons, perform in recitals, play and/ or sing in chapel and area church services, and teach lessons to local students. Smaller ensemble options include joining Jazz Band or Kantorei, or organizing one’s own band or small ensemble.

At Dordt, we encourage you to develop your musical interests because music is an important part of creation. Good music is the shaping of sounds and words in response to God’s command to develop his world. Vocal and instrumental music are enjoyed as part of a life obedient to God, speaking of our relationship to him and also addressing other aspects of life in his good world. We want you to use your gifts in music to serve the body of believers and to enjoy music in community, whether music is your specialty or an avocation.

If you are considering a music major, you can best prepare yourself by acquiring as much experience as you can in band, orchestra, choir, general music, and private instruction in keyboard, instruments, or voice.
