Mathematics is basic to our daily lives. Its theories and methods make possible advances in science, medicine, and technology. It provides quantitative tools for research in telecommunications and computer technology, and it enables governments and industries to analyze economic trends and make informed decisions. Without advanced mathematics there would be much poorer health care, only seat-of-the-pants weather forecasting, and no space exploration. The world as we know it today would not exist.
A degree in mathematics offers the skills and insights needed to pursue a wide range of interests and vocations. At Dordt College you’ll receive personalized, quality instruction and advice from Christian professors who are committed to helping you develop your talents in mathematics. We provide you with excellent technical preparation in key areas of mathematics while helping you see the subject in a new light—illumined by a biblically based, Christian perspective.
Our department is committed to maintaining an up-to-date curriculum and strives to keep its materials and instructional practices current. We use computer technology in many of our classes in order to explore mathematical ideas and reduce tedious computations. Our introductory calculus sequence includes computer activities and group projects. Working with others on computers enables you to deal with the complexities of more realistic problems. Computer graphics help you visualize ideas in new ways, making it easier for you to grasp key concepts and important connections. Mathematics courses such as linear algebra, statistics, and geometry have also profited from the new pedagogical possibilities provided by today’s technology.
